It used to be true that cafes with personality were hard to find outside the major centres in New Zealand but no longer. Nowadays, we like our trim flat whites served to us in colourful cups and saucers (intentionally mismatched) in surroundings that are quirky and fun whether we’re in the big smoke or a small coastal town like Snells Beach, just under an hour away from Auckland.
little & local coffee kitchen is a great example. It’s tucked away in the Mahurangi Shopping Centre in Snells Beach with plenty of parking and on a recent Sunday, it was humming with locals and people like us looking for a coffee before blowing away the cobwebs on the beach.
The decor is simple and the space is bright and airy. Lots of white and duck egg blue, jars of fresh flowers, and art on the walls. Most importantly, the cabinets are full of great looking food and the coffee is very good indeed (they use award-winning local roasters Rush Coffee). The menu includes good old cafe staples and some surprises and it’s all wholesome and plentiful. For breakfast how about buckwheat pancakes with mascarpone and blueberries or a toasted bagel with avocado or eggs any way you want them.
In their own words: “We’re all about great coffee, honest food and celebrating our local community”. little & local is exactly what a local cafe should be and if I lived in Snells Beach I’d be there every day.
Head for the huge red shed (the Warehouse), little & local is just 5 minutes away.
