Some people have tough jobs. One of the toughest must be being a star on the No. 1 Chinese reality TV show, Dad, Where Are We Going? which was filming in New Zealand recently.
I’m kidding of course.
Dad, Where Are We Going? sounds a bit like another reality show where teams race around the world looking for clues but on Dad, Where Are We Going?, the twist is that the participants are fathers and their young children. As usual, the cameras are there to capture all the unexpected dramas and with a cast of 3 – 7 year olds, there should be plenty.
Getting a job on this hugely popular show is quite straightforward. You have to be a father, that’s the easy bit, and a celebrity, a bit harder. The dads in this season’s show include two of the most popular and famous actors in China, a famous gymnast and Olympic champion, a singer-songwriter and a famous Hong Kong actor. And, wouldn’t you know it, their kids score high on the cuteness scale.
Around a quarter of the 1.35 billion people in China have watched Dad, Where Are We Going? and a post by one of the dads on Weibo, one of China’s most popular social media channels, announcing that he and his daughter were going to New Zealand generated close to 100,000 likes and over 26,000 comments.
For New Zealand, this is publicity that can’t be bought. For the dads and their children filming in New Zealand, it’s a lucky break because New Zealand is the only international destination to feature on Dad, Where Are We Going?
